Clue Three
Quarter Square Triangles
You will be making forty-eight of these clues!

General Instructions and Hints: Use a quarter inch seam allowance. Sew your fabrics right sides together. Press towards the darker fabric. Use the images to ensure correct placement and directions. WOF= Width of Fabric.

Needed Fabric Yardage
Fabric A: 1/3 yard
Fabric B: ¾ yard
Fabric C: 1/3 yard

Picture
Piecing:
The first step is to basically make half square triangles.  Twenty-four from a combination of fabrics A & B, and twenty-four from a combination of fabrics B & C.
A/B Combination. On the wrong side of the squares from A (or whichever square is lightest) draw a line from corner to corner.  Pair up, RST, with twelve squares from B, and sew a quarter inch seam on each side of the drawn line.
Picture
Cut the squares apart ON the drawn line.  Flip triangles open and press seams.   There will be  twenty-four.

Now cut your HST’s in half diagonally to make 48 pieced triangles.
Note: half the triangle’s  will be mirrored- it will work out-but pay attention to that when assembling later!

Picture
B/C Combination: Repeat the first steps above, this time using the remaining 5 ½” squares from B, and the twelve 5 ½” squares from C.   You will have 48 pieced triangle’s.
Picture
Assemble the Quarter Square Triangles:
Now it’s time to have some fun!  You’re going to sew the A/B combinations to the B/C combinations! (as pictured).
Picture
Note: Make sure you sew the right combo of triangle’s together- if you sew the “wrong” (half of them are mirrored) combos together you might end up with something backwards!

Voila!  Forty-eight quarter square triangles!  Flip triangles open, press seams, and square to 4 ½”!

Feisty Fifteen- Clue #2

We'll keep things nice and simple this week- and get right on with the clue!

Giant Flying Geese:
6 ½” x 12 ½”
Make sixteen.

General Instructions and Hints: Use a quarter inch seam allowance. Sew your fabrics right sides together. Press towards the darker fabric. Use the images to ensure correct placement and directions. WOF= Width of Fabric.
Needed fabrics for this weeks clue:
Fabric A: 1 ¼ yards
Fabric B:  1 ¼ yards
Picture
On the wrong side of the 7” squares, draw a line from corner to corner.
Place one down on the left side of the rectangles from A, RST.
Sew ON the drawn line.
Cut ¼” away from the line, and press triangle open.
Picture
Repeat for the right side.
Now that both sides are sewn, pressed, and opened,
Square the flying geese units to 6 ½” x 12 ½”.
Picture
And you’re done! You should have sixteen Flying geese measuring 6 ½” x 12 ½”.
Wasn’t this easier than last week?

PS If you don’t like to waste fabric, consider sewing the leftover triangles you trimmed off into HST.  Who knows?  You might want to work this into the quilt to make it more original to you.  Or, for another project.  Or you could just stick it in a box in your attic for your great granddaughter to discover eighty years later, and then SHE can do something super cool with it.

15 Year Mystery Quilt- Clue #1

It's here! the fist "official" week of this program! (those who signed up the early access emails are three weeks into it, and having fun!

Before we get started here are some general reminders about this program: Today we're posting “Clue one” each clue is one little piece of the puzzle that will make up your quilt (they might not necessarily look like traditional blocks until later in the pattern). We'll post one clue each Thursday for a total of sixteen weeks.

There will be two “versions” of the quilt- the first option is a 72” quilt with three colors (you can make it as scrappy as you want- but to make is easier on yourself maybe stick to three color groups). To make this version you’ll need a total of …
Fabric A (Background): 5 yards
Fabric B (main color): 4 yards
Fabric C (accent color): 1 yard
Plus, 2/3 yard for binding.

Option 2- is a slightly scrappier, and bigger (84” square) version of the quilt. The center of the quilt will be identical to the 72” version (just that 4th color added in)- but you’ll add an additional pieced border to expand on it. (no, we won’t say much more than that.. it is a mystery quilt after all!) For this option you’ll need:
Fabric A (background): 6 yards
Fabric B (main color): 4 ½ yards
Fabric C (accent color): 7/8 yards
Fabric D (bonus accent color): ¾ yards
Plus, ¾ yards for binding.
Use these measurements to plan you colors according! As always, the scrappier you make your quilt, the more fabric you’ll potentially need (because there’s more potential waste with awkward cuts… nothing hinky.)

Now onto this weeks  clue!

Horrifyingly enough, we’re starting you off with one of the more time consuming clues (might as well get it over with!)

Clue one- Bowtie Units
make 40.

General Instructions and Hints: Use a quarter inch seam allowance. Sew your fabrics right sides together. Press your seams towards the darker fabric.

Fabrics you’ll need for this week’s Clue:
A:  ¾ yards
B:  ½ yard

Cutting Instructions are in the image below!
Picture

Half Square Triangles:
On the wrong side of the light 3 ¼” squares, draw a line from corner to corner.  Pair up, RST with the dark squares.  Sew a quarter inch seam on each side of the line.  Cut ON the drawn line.  Flip open, and press.  Trim/square to 2 ½” squares.  You need 120 HST’s.
Picture
Picture

Assembly
Row one:  On the left, the 2 ½” square from A.  Right, HST.    Make 40. Press seams.

Row two: HST on the left & right.  Make 40.  Press seams.
Sew the two rows together and press seams.  You will now have 40 funky little bowtie units.

They should measure 4 ½”.  (if they don’t. Fix them so they do!)
And you’re officially done with the first clue!

*Technically, you only need 3” squares, or 2 7/8 if you’re legalistic.  We call for extra because life isn’t perfect, and the ability to trim things up evenly is easier with a bigger square.  But if it works better for you to use the smaller measurements, go for it!

That's all for this week! If you're eager for more- you're still welcome to sign up for option B- which not only gets you the clues two weeks earlier than everybody else, but you also get them sent directly to you inbox (as a PDF- which is much easier to read, and print than a blog!) Click on the item below if you're thinking about it.
