Feisty fifteen- The bonus clue!

Feisty Fifteen
Clue 16
General instructions: Use 1/4 “seam allowance. Sew fabrics Right sides together. Press in between each step and press towards the darker fabric. Use the images to help ensure correct placement, and direction. WOF= Width of Fabric.HST= Half Square Triangle.

Clue Sixteen: (one to grow on!)
Your optional border.
Note. This will bring this particular quilt to 84” square.
The suggested size for a double bed is 97 x 107
The suggested size for a queen is 102 x 112.
The suggested size for a king is 120 x 112.
So….at this point if you want this puppy to grace a bed, we strongly recommend either adding on to our borders, or designing your own entirely.

Needed Fabrics For this Clue:
A: One yard
B: ½ yard
D: ½ yard
Binding: ¾ yard

The left pieced borders squares
Start by grabbing half the triangles from Fabric A.
To the left of the triangles, sew a 2” x 7 ½” rectangles from D. (yes, it will extend past the edge.) press the seams.
Trim the strip, using the 45 degree line on your ruler, so the edges are even with the triangle. (just like you did in clue 7)

Grab the triangles from fabric B.
Sew them to the pieced triangles made above, RST. Open, press seams, and square to 6 ½”. You will have four.

The Right Pieced Borders Squares
Start by grabbing half the triangles from Fabric A.
To the right of the triangles, sew a 2” x 7 ½” rectangles from D. (yes, it will extend past the edge.) press the seams.
Trim the strip, using the 45 degree line on your ruler, so the edges are even with the triangle. (just like you did in clue 7)

Grab the triangles from fabric B.
Sew them to the pieced triangles made above, RST. Open, press seams, and square to 6 ½”. You will have four.

The Rest of the Borders:
For the “Inner Border”
Grab the 2” strips from Fabric D, and sew together into one long strip. Press the seam allowance. ( Note, depending on the pattern on your fabric, you may want to use an “L” seam.) After the seams are pressed, cut four to *60 ½”.
*or whatever your quilt measures!

For the “outer Border”
Now grab the 5” x W.O.F strips from fabric A. Repeat the same steps above. (again, you need four of them measuring *60 ½” long).
*or whatever your quilt measures!

Assembling everything:
Sew the 2” x 60 ½” strips from D to the 5” x 60 ½” strips from fabric B. Press seams.

To the sides, sew two of the pieced borders. Press seams.

To the ends of the remaining two borders, sew the 6 ½” squares from fabric B. Press seams.

Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt top, bringing this sucker to 84” square.

Originally run as a weekly mystery quilt, this pattern is now available in its full, and final form!

Instructions are included for both a 72", and 84" version of this quilt (basically you get instructions for an optional pieced border). You'll also receive instructions on adding an optional 4th color.

This is an "advanced beginner" pattern- using only traditional piecing techniques (no paper piecing, and no applique).

The three color, 84" version of this quilt is pictured.

Feisty Fifteen- Clue #15 The REVEAL (kind of)

Clue Fifteen.
The “Last” clue.. so you only need to make one!
Note: This is the last "official" clue. Those of you who want to make your quilt bigger can come back next week for instructions for a pieced border.

General instructions:
Read all instructions thoroughly before sewing anything. Use a ¼” seam allowance. Sew your fabrics right sides together. WOF= Width of Fabric. HST= Half Square Triangle. Use the images to ensure correct placement, and directions. If you’re spending too much time with “jack the seam ripper” it might be time to take a break!

Cutting: None!

Assembling:
This clue is nice and easy: You’re going to sew your blocks together, in whichever arrangement suits you.
Below is the arrangement we chose.

Here are a couple other options:

Feel free to arrange these however you like, and don’t be afraid to get creative!

You’re quilt should measure 72 ½” square.
At this point, you can be done- or you can continue on with next week’s bonus clue (which will make this quilt bigger!)

Clue Fourteen:
Make 4.

Read all instructions thoroughly before sewing anything. Use a ¼” seam allowance. Sew your fabrics right sides together. WOF= Width of Fabric. HST= Half Square Triangle. Use the images to ensure correct placement, and directions. If you’re spending too much time with “jack the seam ripper” it might be time to take a break!

Fabrics you need:
None! Just grab clues 6, 12, and 13.
Here is where things are finally going to get interesting. Grab ALL the Clues you have made so far and let’s go!
You’re going to sew them into four 36” blocks! Note…. feel free to re-arrange the blocks and sew things together differently than we have. Add sashing between the blocks…. whatever you want, It’s YOUR quilt. Part of this challenge is watching how creative you guys get!

Row One: Make four.
Clue thirteen, Clue Twelve, Clue Six. Press seams.

Row Two: Make four.
Clue 12, Clue 13, Clue 12. Press seams.

Row Three: Make four.
Clue Six, Clue twelve, Clue 13. Press seams.

Sew all the rows together and press the seams.

TA DA!!!! You will have four. They should resemble the image, and measure 36 ½” square.

Feisty Fifteen- Clue #13

Clue thirteen:
(make 12)
General instructions:
Read all instructions thoroughly before sewing anything. Use a ¼” seam allowance. Sew your fabrics right sides together. WOF= Width of Fabric. HST= Half Square Triangle. Use the images to ensure correct placement, and directions. If you’re spending too much time with “jack the seam ripper” it might be time to take a break!
Needed Fabric:
Fabric A: ½ yard. (I mean you only need 3/8 of a yard, but let’s face it. If that’s what you start with, you will have a whoopsie.
Plus: grab the remaining square from clues one, three, and ten.

Grab the remaining squares from clue one, clue three, and clue ten.

You’re going to sew twelve of each row.
Row one: Bow tie, QST, Square. Press seams.
Row two: QST, Windmill, QST. Press seams.
Row Three: Square, QST, Bow Tie. Press seams.
Sew the three rows together and press seams again. These four blocks will measure 12 ½” square. (you should have 12!)

Clue Twelve:
Make eight of each.

General instructions:
Read all instructions thoroughly before sewing anything. Use a ¼” seam allowance. Sew your fabrics right sides together. WOF= Width of Fabric. HST= Half Square Triangle. Use the images to ensure correct placement, and directions. If you’re spending too much time with “jack the seam ripper” it might be time to take a break!

Fabrics Needed: None! Just grab sixteen each of clues eight, and eleven.

Clue 12: the “right side”
Grab eight each of clues eight, and eleven (the ones with the rectangle on the right side)
Sew them together and press seams. They should measure 12 ½” square. You should have eight.

Clue 12: the “left side”
Now, grab the other eight of each of clue eight, and clue eleven (the ones with the rectangle on the left side)

Sew them together and press seams.
You should have eight, measuring 12 ½” square.

And you’re done with this clue! Wasn’t that easy?

Clue Eleven:
You will be making eight of each.

General instructions:
Read all instructions thoroughly before sewing anything. Use a ¼” seam allowance. Sew your fabrics right sides together. WOF= Width of Fabric. HST= Half Square Triangle. Use the images to ensure correct placement, and directions. If you’re spending too much time with “jack the seam ripper” it might be time to take a break!

Needed Fabric:
Fabric A: 1 /2 yard
Needed Clues: sixteen of the 4 ½” squares made for Clue one.

Cutting:

Sew eight of the rectangles from A to the right side of squares from Clue one. Press seams.

They will all measure 4 ½” x 12 ½”.

Sew the other eight rectangles from A to the left of the squares from Clue one. Press seams.

These, will also measure 4 ½” x 12 ½”.

And your done! (at least until next week).

Clue Ten:
Make 12

General instructions:
Read all instructions thoroughly before sewing anything. Use a ¼” seam allowance. Sew your fabrics right sides together. WOF= Width of Fabric. HST= Half Square Triangle. Fabrics needed: None!
Just grab the squares we just finished trimming from clue 9 (last week)

Cutting: None!
(isn’t it easy this week?)

Grab your square from clue nine- and sew them together in sets of two.

Press seams.
You should have twenty four sets resembling the image

Now you get to sew the sets of two together to make twelve windmill blades.
They will measure 4 ½” square, and resemble the image. You should have twelve.

And your done!

Fesity Fifteen- Clue #9

Clue 9:
Make 48

General Instructions and hints: Use a quarter inch seam allowance. Sew your fabrics right sides together.
Press towards the darker fabric. Use the images to ensure correct placement and directions.
WOF= Width of Fabric.

Needed Fabrics:
Nothing ! just grab the pieced triangles from clue 5, and the extended triangle from clue 7.

Grab your pieced triangles from clue 5- and the extended triangles from clue 7.
You’re going to sew them together to make forty-eight squares.

Trimming:
Since this is a weird variation of a quarter square triangle- we’re going to trim them up a bit differently than normal:

Start by lining your ruler up against the “rectangle” from A and trimming to 2 ½”.

Now twist the unit one side over (clockwise) and trim I ¼” from where the triangles meet in the center.

Flip it over 180 degrees- and trim to 2 ½” ( from the edge you just cut).

And you’re done! There should be no need to trim up that 4th edge (we want to maintain those measurements as they are!)
You should have 48 of these little guys, measuring 2 ½”.

Feisty Fifteen- Clue #8

Clue Eight:
Make 16

Fabric Needed for this clue:
Fabric A: 3/8 of a yard
Additionally: Grab all sixteen of the flying geese from clue 2.

Go grab the flying geese made for Clue 2.
Sew the strips to the bottom of the Flying geese, as pictured. Press seams.

That’s it…that’s all…you’re done. You will have sixteen of these, and they measure 8 ½” x 12 ½” square.

Feisty Fifteen- Clue #7

Clue Seven:
Extended Triangles
Make 48.

Yardage Needed for this Clue:
Fabric A: 1/4 yard
Fabric B: 1/4 yard

Piecing:
Cut the 3” squares from B in half once, diagonally, to create 48 Triangles.

RST, sew the strips from A to the left side of the triangle. Yes, it will extend out past the point of the triangle. Press seams.
Grab a good ruler, and rotary cutter, and cut off the extended side of the rectangle so it’s 45 degrees and flush with the triangle.

And you’re done! You should have 48 of these little triangles!
